Northern Doctors and Students Inaugural Sports Encounter 2023 was held on 10th of September 2023 12.00pm onwards at the playground, University of Jaffna with the collaboration of Students’ Wellbeing Centre, Jaffna Medical Association and Medical Students’ Union, Faculty of Medicine.
Prof. S. Raviraj, Professor in Surgery and Consultant Surgeon, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine presided over the occasion as the chief guest. Presence of Prof. R. Surenthirakumaran, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. S. Kannathasan, Dean of Faculty of Graduate Studies, Dr. Chrishanthi Rajasooriyar, President, Jaffna Medical Association, Northern Doctors Cricket Club, Northern Doctors Netball Team, academic staffs, non-academic staffs and students added more significance to this occasion.
Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Special Guest, the President, Jaffna Medical Association, the Coordinator, Students’ Wellbeing Centre, Captains from Northern Doctors Cricket Club & Jaffna Medical Faculty Cricket Team, Captain from Jaffna Medical Faculty Netball Team, the President from Medical Students’ Union and Umpire lit the traditional oil lamp as it is an integral part of our tradition.
Dr. Chrishanthi Rajasooriyar, President, Jaffna Medical Association, delivered the welcome address. She warmly welcomed the guests and greeted the players on behalf of Jaffna Medical Association and also mentioned that these sports activities will enhance the wellbeing of students and doctors.
Chief Guest Prof. S. Raviraj, Professor in Surgery and Consultant Surgeon, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine thanked Dr. B. Balagobi, Coordinator, Students’ Wellbeing Centre, Faculty of Medicine for guiding the Medical students for conducting these kinds of events. In addition to that he mentioned that he will give more support in improving extracurricular activities of Medical students as always.
Prof. R. Surenthirakumaran, Dean of Faculty of Medicine mentioned that Medical Faculty will always encourage the students’ involvement in sports and recreation.
Prof. S. Kannathasan, Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies delivered the address on behalf of Vice Chancellor, University of Jaffna. He congratulated the organizing committee for conducting sports encounter among Northern doctors and students and stated these activities will develop team work and leadership skills.

It was conducted among Northern Doctors Cricket Club (NDCC) and Jaffna Medical Faculty Cricket Team (JMFC).

Jaffna Medical Faculty Cricket Team (JMFC) Triumphed and Seized the Championship trophy and medals and certificates were awarded to the winners of the hardball cricket encounter 2023.
Mr. T. Kaliyugan Captain, JMFC, Mr. Kishoran , JMFC and Dr. Nishan Perera , NDCC were awarded Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Best Fielder of the match respectively.
Mr. T. Kaliyugan, Captain, JMFC won the title of man of the match for the sensible knock and good wicketkeeping.

It was conducted among Northern Doctors Netball Team and Jaffna Medical Faculty Netball Team.
Northern Doctors Netball Team consists of Dr. M. Anoja, Dr. M. Thanuja, Dr. S. Vasuki, Dr. K. Ajantha, Dr. J. Nishanthy, Dr. K. Vinotha, Dr. V. Gajenthini, Dr. R. Samapavi, Dr. A. Chandricca, Dr. A. Menaca, Dr. A. Jothika, Dr. K. Thushyanthini, Dr. G. M. D. Sureska and Dr. U. Keerthiga.

Northern Doctors Netball Team won the championship trophy and medals and certificates were awarded to the winners of Netball encounter 2023.
Dr. V. Gajenthini, and Dr. K. Thusyanthini from Northern Doctors Netball Team were awarded with the Best Shooter and Best Defender respectively.
Dr. A. Chandriccaa, Northern Doctors Netball Team was won the award for the most valuable player of the match.
The sports encounter 2023 concluded successfully with the delivery of the vote of thanks by Mr. T. Mathumilan, President, Medical Students’ Union, Faculty of Medicine.
