A Shramadana Program was carried out on 28th of October 2023 from 8 am to 12.45 pm at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. It was collaboratively organized by Students’ Wellbeing Centre & Centre for Digital Epidemiology (CoDE), Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. It served as a significant community engagement initiative aimed at fostering volunteerism and addressing various social and environmental needs. Several groups of dedicated individuals participated in this event, including staff members from the Students’ Wellbeing Centre, the Family Health Centre, Centre for Digital Epidemiology, Women Empowerment Forum, Prison and Probation School Workers and Community Health Workers.
The campaign was first initiated from the Wellbeing Centre premises followed by the whole faculty premises, where participants engaged in a range of activities to improve the environment. These activities included:
- Cleaning the Surroundings: The program started with a thorough cleanup of the surroundings. Participants worked together to remove litter and debris, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment.
- Soil Preparation in garden area: The soil in the vicinity was prepared for cultivation. This involved activities like plowing, removing weeds, and clearing away stones to create a suitable area for planting.
- Mosquito Prevention: The group divided into two teams to eradicate mosquito breeding sites within the faculty premises. This crucial task helped in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for the community.
- Cleanliness Maintenance: After addressing the immediate needs, the team made sure that the faculty surroundings remained clean and well-maintained. This ongoing effort contributes to the overall appearance and hygiene of the area.
- Beautification: Participants actively took part in beautifying the premises. This involved various activities such as planting plants, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area etc.
