Student Debate 2024 – Medical Students vs Law Students

A friendly debate contest on the topic “Restructuring of higher education is or not the solution to economic crisis” was held on 26th of August 2024 at the Hoover Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna from 2pm onwards. The event featured a friendly competition between first-year Medical students and Law students. It was collaboratively organized by Personal Professional Development Stream, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Law, Faculty of Arts, Students’ Wellbeing Centre, Faculty of Medicine and Social Reconciliation Centre, University of Jaffna.  

Prof. K. Gajapathy (Chairperson, Social Reconciliation Centre, University of Jaffna), Prof. S.Kannathasan (Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies), Academic Staff from both Faculty of Medicine and Department of Law add more significance to this occasion. Dr.Brammah.R.Thangarajah (Senior Lecturer, Department of Medicine and Medical Faculty Representative of Social Reconciliation Centre), Dr.S.Kumaran (Senior Lecturer, Department of Community and Family Medicine and Coordinator, PPDS) and Mrs.Kosalai Mathan (Head, Department of Law, Faculty of Arts) facilitated the event.

The debate was commenced with the introductory talk by Dr.Sanchayan Rajasingham (Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, Faculty of Arts) followed by the talk of Prof. K. Gajapathy (Chairperson, Social Reconciliation Centre, University of Jaffna).

Dr.B.Balagobi (Senior Lecturer, Department of Surgery and Coordinator, Students’ Wellbeing Centre), Mr.Mahalingam Aruliniyan (Editor, Journalist and Writer), Dr.Sanchayan Rajasingham (Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, Faculty of Arts) and Mr.Hasitha Perera (Department of Law, Faculty of Arts) were served as the judging panel for the debate.

Ms.Rebecca Thejasvini Philis, Ms. Mohammed Sulfikar Aaysha Zuha, Ms.Muhammadhu Masahir Amla and Ms.H.A.Hamna Azur represented Law students as proposition team and argued for “Restructuring of higher education is the solution to economic crisis”. Ms.Rebecca Thejasvini Philis lead the Law team. Ms.Mathumai, Ms.Minthasha, Ms.Verlini, Ms.Nivethana represented the Medical Faculty Team (Opposition Team) which argued for the “Restructuring of higher education is not the solution to economic crisis” and Ms. Mathumai lead the team.

Closing remarks were given by Mr.Mahalingam Aruliniyan (Editor, Journalist and Writer) and Dr.Sanchayan Rajasingham (Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, Faculty of Arts). The judging panel announced the Medical Faculty team as the winners of the debate. The debate was concluded with the vote of thanks by Mr.Jagathguru Ramkumar (46th Batch).
