The Department of Community and Family Medicine partnered with the Department of Linguistics & English in the launch of the Handbook on Sex, Gender and Health: Perspectives from South Asia, edited by TK Sundari Ravindran et al., (Springer; January 2025). The event was held on Thursday December 5, 2024 (3-5 pm) in the Arts Seminar Hall, Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna.
The Handbook addresses sex and gender issues in health in the South Asian Region, including Sri Lanka. It adopts a social determinant of health approach and an intersectionality and diversity lens to illustrate the multi-layered complexities of gender, health, and well-being from various perspectives and lived experiences in various South Asian settings. Dr. Ramya Kumar, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Community & Family Medicine, is a member of the Handbook’s editorial team.
Dr. P.A.D. Coonghe, Head of the Department of Community & Family Medicine, discussed the importance of sex and gender to health in northern Sri Lanka, and Dr. Ramya Kumar presented her chapter in a panel discussion with other authors. Approximately 60 people attended the event.
