The awarding ceremony of Certificate Course in Perioperative Care and Inauguration of Certificate Course for Semenology for the 2nd batch was organized collaboratively by the Department of Surgery, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, International College of Surgeons and the Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) at the University of Jaffna on 31st of July 2024 at 2.00 pm in the Hoover Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine. It is significant, that last year December we had the Inauguration of the Perioperative care course along with the awarding ceremony of the Semenology course for the 1st batch.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests including Prof.S.Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna, Prof.R.Surenthirakumaran, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, Dr.T.Sathiyamoorthy, Director of Teaching Hospital Jaffna, Consultants from Teaching Hospital Jaffna, Professors and Lecturers, Secretary of Sivapoomi Trust, academic and non-academic staff, parents and students.
The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp. The lamp was lit by the Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna, the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, the Director of Teaching Hospital Jaffna, Dr.S.Gobishangar, the Head of Department of Surgery, Dr.K.Guruparan, the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr.V.Sutharsan, the President of Jaffna Medical Asssociation, Dr.S.Premakrishna, Consultant Anaesthetist, Representative of International College of Surgeons and the mentor of Certificate Course for Perioperative Care, Mr.Mahesan Thayaharan, Regional Credit Head Northern region of HNB and the Secretary of Sivapoomi Trust and one of the student representative from each courses.
The welcome address for the event was delivered by Dr.M.Thuvaraka, Temporary Demonstrator of Department of Surgery. Then introduction to the Certificate course for Semenology was delivered by Dr.S.Raguraman, the Course Director for the Semenology course emphasizing the importance of development of skills and attitude and shared how successful was the completion of this course for the 1st batch and how they are satisfied with the outcome of job opportunities for the young generation via these courses. It was followed by Dr.B.Balagobi, the Course Director for the Perioperative Care course, who shared the journey they have come across in organizing the Perioperative Care course, and also emphasized that this is the first time in Sri Lanka to do a Certificate Course for Perioperative Care.
Mr.M.Thayaharan, the Secretary of Sivapoomi Trust addressed the gathering on behalf of Dr.Aru Thirumurugan, the Founder of Sivapoomi Trust, wishing all the supporters of the Certificate course to continue the service and buildup a society with great services. Dr. Sarawanabavan, the Deputy Director of CODL extended his appreciation for the dedicated work of all the pillars of the both courses who worked so hard for its successful completion.
Prof.R.Surethirakumaran, the Dean of Faculty of Medicine during his address emphasized the importance of professionalism and the development of human resources for a successful team work. Finally, the Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna, Prof.S.Srisatkunarajah shared his insights, expressing that these courses will significantly enrich both university and the community engagement. And also, he said that this course will give opportunity those young generation who are unable to enter university.
The most awaited moment of this event finally arrived as the award winners of the Certificate Course for Perioperative care were honoured with the certificates by the Vice Chancellor and the Dean. The event was concluded with the Vote of Thanks and the momentous group photographs with all the distinguished guests and the students of the Perioperative Care Course.
