Department of Pathology was established in May 1980 in the Pathology Laboratory building at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. It was moved to the Ground floor of the Main Faculty building in 1982 then to the 1^st floor 1987. After the completion of the construction of the 2^nd floor the department was moved to the present location in 1988. It is located in the 2^nd floor of the south-eastern wing of the Faculty building and hasa pathology museum, a student’s laboratory and a histopathology processing laboratory.

The research interest of the department includes disorders of renal system, bone and soft tissues pathology, thyroid disorders and lipid disorders.
