Our History

The Centre for Digital Epidemiology (CoDE) was formally established on 13 March 2023 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of health research and innovation in Sri Lanka. The establishment of CoDE represents a strategic move towards integrating digital technologies with epidemiological research and public health practice.

CoDE was founded with the generous support of the Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni (USA), whose contribution played a pivotal role in transforming the vision of a dedicated digital epidemiology centre into reality.

The proposal to establish the Centre for Digital Epidemiology was initially submitted to the Faculty Board and approved at its 389th meeting held on 11 January 2023, along with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Centre. Following this, the proposal received formal approval from the University Senate at its 473rd meeting on 24 January 2023, and subsequently from the University Council at its meeting held on 25 March 2023.

From its inception, CoDE has been guided by a clear vision—to become a centre of excellence in epidemiological research. In pursuit of this vision, the Centre is committed to advancing knowledge and learning through research, teaching, and community engagement, underpinned by strong academic, scientific, and ethical principles.

Adding further strength to its foundation, CoDE proudly established an International Advisory Board—a panel of distinguished experts and thought leaders from around the world. This board enriches the Centre’s work by providing global perspectives, technical guidance, and strategic insights, helping CoDE align with international standards in research and innovation.

With a focus on collaboration, community engagement, and capacity building, CoDE continues to grow as a dynamic research centre—set to lead Sri Lanka into a new era of digital epidemiology.
