Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply directly to the Faculty of Medicine?

No. Formal applications must be submitted to the University Grants Commission according to the current UGC instructions.

Does the Faculty select international applicants?

No. The UGC assesses eligibility, processes applications and communicates final offers.

How long is the MBBS programme?

The academic programme is five years.

What subjects are required?

For the 2025/2026 academic year, applicants require two credit passes and one simple pass in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Must the results be obtained in one sitting?

Yes. The required passes must be obtained in the same sitting under one recognised examining board.

Is the programme taught in English?

Yes. The MBBS programme is conducted in English.

Do I need an English-language certificate?

Applicants whose primary language is not English, or whose previous education was not conducted in English, must provide an accepted English-language qualification.

What is the annual course fee?

For the 2025/2026 academic year, the annual tuition and examination fee for Medicine is US$15,000.

Is there an application fee?

Yes. The UGC charges a non-refundable US$100 application-processing fee.

Is hostel accommodation provided?

No. Students admitted under this provision should arrange private accommodation.

Are scholarships available?

The Government of Sri Lanka does not provide scholarships or financial assistance under this provision.

Does meeting the minimum requirements guarantee admission?

No. Places are limited, and final selection is made by the UGC.

Can I enter Sri Lanka on a tourist visa?

No. Students must obtain the correct visa before travelling.

Is the degree automatically accepted in every country?

Applicants should confirm internship, licensing and professional-registration requirements with the medical regulator of the country where they plan to practise.
