Jaffna Day Surgery Centre (JDSC) – Pilot Phase

We are proud to announce the successful inauguration of the Jaffna Day Surgery Centre (JDSC) Pilot Phase at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, established in close collaboration with the Teaching Hospital Jaffna (THJ) and the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The centre has been designed to provide surgical procedures in a safe, efficient, and patient-friendly manner, enabling patients to undergo surgery and return home on the same day. This initiative aims to reduce long waiting times, lower healthcare costs, and improve access to essential surgical care for the people of the Northern Province.

The JDSC has been established through a strong collaboration involving the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, Teaching Hospital Jaffna, the Ministry of Health, international medical and health organizations, IMHO, diaspora partners, and with the valued support of the Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni Association (JMFOA).

The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Suranga Dolamulla, DDG ET&R, the Ministry of Health; Dr. T. Sathiyamoorthy, Director of the Teaching Hospital Jaffna; Professor R. Surenthirakumaran, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna; Dr. S. Raviraj, Member of the University Grants Commission; Professor Balagobi and his team; Dr. Karunyan Arulanandam (IMHO, USA), along with faculty members, consultant specialists, medical officers, nursing officers, staff, and other distinguished guests.

The successful implementation of this centre was made possible through the immense dedication, hard work, and tireless commitment of the staff of the Teaching Hospital Jaffna and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, whose contributions are highly appreciated.

It was emphasized that this pilot phase requires further strengthening and expansion to maximize its benefits to the public. Through this joint effort, the University of Jaffna and the Teaching Hospital Jaffna have taken a meaningful step towards addressing the healthcare needs of the community, particularly in the Northern Province.

Valuable medical equipment for the centre was generously contributed by IMHO, JMFOA, well-wishers, and other supporting organizations.

The JDSC represents a major milestone in accessible, patient-centred surgical care, improving both the efficiency and quality of surgical services, while also laying the groundwork for future medical tourism opportunities.
