
The Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, was honoured to welcome Miss Bryony Lovett, Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon from Essex, United Kingdom, on 23rd February 2026.
Miss Lovett currently serves as Medical Director for Surgery at the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and is also a Consultant Surgeon affiliated with Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital. She has extensive expertise in gastrointestinal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, colonoscopy, and laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Her clinical practice encompasses advanced laparoscopic procedures for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal prolapse, and various types of hernia including inguinal, parastomal, and incisional hernias.
Appointed in 2001 to the former Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, she has held several leadership roles, including Clinical Lead for General Surgery and Urology. In addition to her clinical excellence, Miss Lovett has made significant contributions to surgical education and training. She has served as an Intercollegiate MRCS Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, Deputy Chair of the IQA Committee for the MRCS examination, and currently serves as the MRCS Convenor for the Intercollegiate MRCS Examination in Sri Lanka.
During her friendly visit to the Department, Miss Lovett toured the Clinical and Teaching Research Block (CTRB) and observed the teaching and training facilities. She interacted closely with final-year medical students during their surgical clinical training sessions and engaged in meaningful academic discussions with both undergraduate students and academic staff. She shared valuable insights into surgical career pathways and emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in patient safety and evidence-based practice. The session was highly interactive, with students actively engaging in discussions regarding postgraduate training opportunities, research prospects, and international collaboration.
The Department of Surgery sincerely appreciates Miss Lovett’s visit and the time she generously devoted to sharing her professional experiences. Her visit marks an important step towards strengthening international academic collaboration and enhancing global exposure for our students and staff.
