Book Launch: Uthuru Kone Arumesiya by Dr. Viduni Basnayake

The Sinhala book Uthuru Konç Arumasia (The Wonder at the Northern Corner) authored by Dr. Viduni Basnayake was launched on Sunday, 25 January 2026 at the Auditorium of the Clinical Research and Training Block, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. The event was co-organised by the Medical Students’ Union, Student Wellbeing Centre, and the Department of Community and Family Medicine.

Dr. Basnayake, an alumna of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna (Batch of 2019–2024), graduated in January 2025 and is currently completing her internship at Teaching Hospital Jaffna. Originally from Kandy, this is her first Sinhala publication. The book reflects on her six-year journey as a medical student in Jaffna, capturing the region’s landscapes, history, culture, and everyday lives through the perspective of a “Visitor to Jaffna.” It thoughtfully bridges North and South, blending personal narrative with history, folklore, and social observation.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp and a welcome address by Prof. R. Surenthirakumaran, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Basnayake shared her inspiration for writing the book and expressed gratitude to her parents and sister, who were present at the occasion.

Prof. Gitanjali Sathiadas, Chair Professor of Paediatrics, was invited to receive the first copy of the book. Copies were subsequently presented to academic staff and members of the Teaching Hospital Jaffna.

Three distinguished reviewers addressed the gathering:

  • Swaminathan Vimal, Senior Lecturer in Linguistics, University of Jaffna
  • Sharmila Vinothini, Journalist and Production Manager, IBC Tamil Television
  • Ramya Kumar, Senior Lecturer, Department of Community and Family Medicine

The 45th Batch of medical students added colour to the evening with a fusion dance performance in keeping with the theme of the book. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. A. Dilothaman, Secretary of the Medical Students’ Union.

The book is available for online purchase via Grantha.lk and at the Grantha Bookshop, 6A/39, New Galle Road, Koralawella, Moratuwa, as well as at bookshops island-wide.
