Collaborative Study Day: Advancing Postgraduate Training in Jaffna

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Jaffna, in a successful and prestigious collaboration with the Board of Study in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo, conducted a comprehensive two-day Study Day on the 14th and 15th of March 2026. Hosted at the Clinical Training and Research Block (CTRB), Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, the workshop addressed critical advancements in Subfertility, Gynaecological Oncology, Obstetric Ultrasound, and Fetal Medicine. This second collaborative session in Jaffna was spearheaded by Dr. Madhava Karunarathna, Chairman of the Board of Study (PGIM), and Prof. S. Raguraman, Professor and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (University of Jaffna), setting a high benchmark for future regional academic projects.

Day 1: Clinical Foundations and Practical Exposure

The inaugural day commenced with an in-depth exploration of female subfertility led by Prof. S. Raguraman, followed by a clinical and practical overview of Colposcopy by Dr. M. Thanuya. The morning sessions concluded with a detailed lecture on Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) by Dr. R. Thuvarathipan. During the afternoon, trainees transitioned to the Women’s Health Centre for intensive practical exposure. This hands-on segment featured obstetric ultrasound training demonstrated by Dr. R. Thuvarathipan —covering first-trimester, mid-trimester anomaly scan, and third-trimester wellbeing scans—alongside specialized gynaecological follicular tracking done by Prof.S. Raguraman.

The day concluded with a dinner, fostering a collegial environment for focused brief clinical discussions on Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), fertility-sparing surgeries in oncology, and the role of Fetal Medicine in reducing perinatal mortality.

Day 2: Advanced Case Studies and Academic Synthesis

The second day focused on specialized domains, including male subfertility addressed by Dr. V. Thanusan and a vital session on maternal “near misses” and patient safety conducted by Prof. K. Muhunthan. Clinical expertise in Gynaecological Oncology was further sharpened through case-based discussions on endometrial and ovarian carcinomas facilitated by Dr. M. Thanuya, followed by a session on the complexities of multiple pregnancy management by Dr. R. Thuvarathipan. To ensure ongoing practical readiness despite the dense academic schedule, OSCE materials were distributed for trainees to complete via independent study.

The program concluded with a formal feedback session and the distribution of certificates to participants and resource persons. The overwhelming positive feedback scored the value of this collaboration in providing postgraduate trainees with elite, practical exposure in a regional setting. Following a vote of thanks, the event closed with a commemorative photography session, marking the end of a highly informative and elaborate academic exchange.
