An Interactive Educational Session on Mental Health and Psychosocial Rehabilitation

The Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, invited Dr. Murali Thyloth, a senior professor in psychiatry and a well-renowned international expert in psychosocial rehabilitation, to have an informal interactive discussion with the local mental health professionals, from senior consultants to junior medical officers. The session was held on June 10, 2026, from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm at the Clinical Teaching and Research Block (CTRB) of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna.

The session brought around 20 participants who actively engaged in the discussion, reflected on best practices, and shared their experiences on the vital role of psychosocial rehabilitation in promoting recovery and improving the quality of life of individuals living with mental illness. Through an engaging and interactive approach, Dr. Thyloth shared valuable insights into contemporary psychosocial rehabilitation models, intervention strategies, and approaches to integrating psychosocial care into routine clinical practice. He also highlighted that while pharmacological treatment remains an essential component of mental health care, integrating evidence-based psychosocial interventions and rehabilitation are important to achieve holistic and person-centered care.

The program achieved its objectives by not only enhancing awareness of psychosocial rehabilitation and strengthening participants’ understanding of evidence-based psychosocial interventions and recovery-oriented approaches in mental health care but also providing an important platform for professional networking and peer learning. The Department of Psychiatry wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to Dr. Murali Thyloth for his valuable contribution and all the participants for their enthusiastic involvement.
