SLMC informed that the Accreditation Unit of Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) has been awarded Recognition Status by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) for a period of ten years from 7 March 2023. The aim of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is to enhance the quality of medical education worldwide. The recognition is a mark of international approval for the high standards maintained by the Unit in the accreditation process, post-accreditation monitoring, and decision-making when accrediting Medical Faculties in Sri Lanka. The WFME recognition for the SLMC’s Accreditation Unit is a significant milestone in the 98-year history of the SLMC which is one of the oldest medical regulatory bodies in the Asian region. The Accreditation Unit and the Sri Lanka Medical Council as Per Paragraph 19 (E) of the Medical Ordinance is responsible for the maintenance of minimum standards of medical education and training in Sri Lanka. The Accreditation Unit’s most recent re-accreditation visit to the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna took place from 13th to 15th February 2023. As per the Report of the Review Team, the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna has “Attained the Quality Assurance Standards” set by the Accreditation Unit and Sri Lanka Medical Council and has recommended its re-accreditation.
Accordingly, Accreditation has been granted for Five Years From 28.04.2023 to 28.04.2028 by the Accreditation Unit and the Council. Annual monitoring of the Medical Faculty by the Accreditation Unit will support to ensure that the accreditation status continues until the faculty is next visited.
