Reaffirming its commitment to community service and equitable access to healthcare, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, joined hands with consultant specialists from the Teaching Hospital Jaffna and the Regional Health Services to conduct the Third Monthly Free Specialist Medical Camp at the Sri Durga Devi Devasthanam, Tellippalai, on 26 July 2026. The outreach initiative brought specialist healthcare closer to the community by providing comprehensive medical consultations and health services free of charge.
Organised by the Sri Durga Devi Devasthanam Management Committee, the medical camp offered specialist consultations in General Surgery, General Medicine, Genitourinary Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Anaesthesia, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery, Dermatology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, together with ophthalmic screening. The participation of specialists on a rotational basis ensures that a broad range of expertise is available while maintaining the continuity and sustainability of this monthly community outreach programme. Residents of Tellippalai and neighbouring communities benefited from free specialist consultations, health education, counselling, early disease detection, and referral services, enabling timely access to quality healthcare closer to their homes.
This initiative was launched with the first monthly medical camp on 30 May 2026, which provided specialist services in General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Dermatology, and ophthalmic screening. Building on its success, the second medical camp, held on 28 June 2026, broadened the scope of services by introducing Orthopaedic Surgery and Genitourinary Surgery demonstrating the programme’s progressive expansion and the increasing collaboration among specialist disciplines.
The Monthly Free Specialist Medical Camp reflects the Faculty of Medicine’s enduring commitment to social accountability, extending specialist healthcare beyond hospital walls and into the community. Through the dedication of Faculty academics, consultant specialists, healthcare professionals, and volunteers, the initiative continues to improve access to quality healthcare while strengthening partnerships between the University, the health sector, and the local community.
