Inauguration of Certificate Course in Perioperative Care and Book Launch on Perioperative Care

The inauguration of the Certificate Course in Perioperative Care and the book launch on Perioperative Care took place on 8th of December 2023 at 2:00 pm in the Hoover Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine. This event was collaboratively organized by the Department of Surgery, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and the Centre for Open and Distance Learning at the University of Jaffna.

The presence of distinguished individuals such as Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Prof. R. Surenthirakumaran, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Director of Teaching Hospital Jaffna, consultants from Teaching Hospital Jaffna, the Director of the Centre for Open and Distance Learning at the University of Jaffna, as well as academic & non-academic staff, medical students, and followers of the Perioperative Care Course added considerable significance to this event.

The event commenced with a symbolic and traditional lighting of the oil lamp. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, a Consultant and Director from Teaching Hospital Jaffna, the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies, academic staff, course coordinator, the Director of the Centre for Open and Distance Learning, along with a participant from the Certificate Course in Perioperative Care, collectively lit the oil lamp, recognizing its integral role in our cultural tradition.

The welcome address for the event was delivered by Ms. Abiramy, 43rd batch, Faculty of Medicine. Continuing the programme, Dr.B.Balagobi Coordinator for Perioperative Care, delivered a profound speech, providing insights into the course introduction and outlining the anticipated learning outcomes and highlighted that individuals enrolled in the course have the opportunity to not only gain more practical knowledge but also to perfect their skills. His remarks underscore the course’s role in not just providing knowledge but also in honing the practical expertise essential for effective perioperative care.

Professor R. Surenthirakumaran, the distinguished Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, delivered a compelling speech underscoring the significance of the perioperative care course. In his address, he emphatically expressed that participating in the perioperative care course is instrumental in fostering the development of fundamental skills.

On this special occasion, Dr. T. Sathiyamoorthy, Director of Teaching Hospital, Jaffna, delivered an uplifting speech expressing heartfelt joy at the collaboration of this course with the teaching hospital. He extended warm wishes to the authors, recognizing the historical significance of this event as the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. The director’s remarks conveyed not only happiness for the collaborative effort but also acknowledgement of the pioneering nature of this course in the history of healthcare education in Sri Lanka

Prof. J. Robinson, Director, CODL, University of Jaffna gave a speech. During his address he emphasized the heightened importance for our society to comprehend he principles and techniques of perioperative care. In his speech, he conveyed that acquiring a thorough understanding of these principles is imperative for the betterment of our community.

Professor S. Srisatkunaraja, Vice Chancellor, University of Jaffna shared his insights, expressing that this particular course significantly enriches both university and community engagement. In his remarks, he highlighted how the course contributes to fostering stronger ties between the university and the community, recognizing it as a valuable initiative with mutually beneficial outcomes.

The eagerly anticipated moment of this event finally unfolded before the audience.

The book titled “Perioperative Care: A Guide for Healthcare Workers” has been officially released. It is authored by Dr. B. Balagobi, Consultant Urological Surgeon and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna and Dr. S. Raguraman, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna

Dr. S. Raguraman, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna delivered a concise talk about the perioperative care book. In his remarks, he highlighted that the book has been meticulously crafted to serve as an invaluable resource for healthcare professionals across various disciplines he emphasized that the book stands as a testament to their extensive experience and unwavering commitment to the field of perioperative care.

The book was officially launched by Professor S. Rajendra, Professor in surgery & Consultant Surgeon, University Surgical Unit, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.

The inaugural copy was presented to Professor S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Professor R.Surenthirakumaran, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. S.Gobishankar, Consultant Surgeon, and Senior Lecturer, Head of the Department of Surgery. Additionally, Dr. T. Sathiyamoorthy, Director of Teaching Hospital Jaffna, Dr. K. Guruparan, Consultant Surgeon, and Senior Lecturer, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Professor K.Muhunthan, Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Honorary Consultant – Teaching Hospital Jaffna along with Dr.Mrs.S.Uthayakumar, Senior Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, a representative on behalf of matrons and a student from course follower were also honoured during the presentation.

The book was reviewed by Dr. S. Premakrishna, Consultant Anaesthetist, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna. During the review, he provided brief descriptions of each chapter, highlighting key content. Additionally, Dr. Premakrishna noted the book’s visually appealing presentation, emphasizing the inclusion of informative pictures that enhance its overall quality.

The event reached its conclusion with a vote of thanks presented by Mr. M. Sajith, 43rd batch, Faculty of Medicine.
