Be a Lifesaver, Learn First Aid: First Aid Awareness Programme for Three-Wheeler Drivers in Jaffna Town

“Be a Lifesaver, Learn First Aid” was a community-based first aid awareness programme conducted for three-wheeler drivers in Jaffna Town. The project aimed to improve the ability of drivers to respond effectively to road traffic accidents and medical emergencies before professional medical assistance arrives. Three-wheeler drivers were selected as the target group because they are frequently present at accident scenes and often serve as first responders. The programme was organized by Clinical Group 5 of the 45th Batch.Prior to the awareness session, medical students received practical first aid training from St. John Ambulance, Jaffna. The awareness programme to the drivers included lectures, multimedia presentations, live demonstrations, and hands-on training on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking management, bleeding control, bandaging techniques, fracture management, and recovery position. Educational materials were distributed, and pre-assessments and post-assessments were conducted to evaluate knowledge improvement among participants. The activity successfully enhanced first aid awareness and emergency response preparedness among three-wheeler drivers, contributing to community safety and public health promotion.
