Summary of Activities
Our field health programme was conducted as a Screening and Awareness Campaign for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Cancers among the populations of Valaipaadu, Kiranchi, Jeyapuram South, and Jeyapuram North in the Kilinochchi District. The programme aimed to promote awareness, identify risk factors, and facilitate early detection of common NCDs and cancers in underserved rural communities. The project began with meetings with the supervisor, topic selection, proposal preparation, and obtaining the necessary permissions from relevant authorities including the MOH, Divisional Secretariat, hospital administration, and community leaders. Educational materials such as leaflets, banners, posters, and an awareness video were developed to improve community knowledge regarding NCDs and cancer prevention.
Two screening camps were conducted in Veravil and Jeyapuram. During these camps, participants underwent blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing, anthropometric assessment, vision screening, dental examinations, and screening for oral and breast cancers. Community members were also educated on healthy lifestyle practices, risk factor modification, and the importance of regular screening. Individuals identified with abnormal findings or high-risk conditions were counselled and referred to appropriate healthcare institutions for further evaluation and management. Data collection, questionnaire administration, documentation, and community feedback were carried out throughout the programme. Following the completion of the screening camps, the collected data were analysed and evaluated to assess the prevalence of NCDs, cancer risk factors, and community awareness levels. The programme successfully enhanced public awareness, promoted early detection of diseases, strengthened community engagement, and provided valuable practical experience in community-based healthcare delivery and public health interventions.
